The Romance Store® began life in Northern California in about 1987 as a home "pleasure" party company called Nice -N- Naughty. It was (and is) owned and operated by a woman known as simply "Katherine." Since then there have been a number of evolutions. At that time, proprietary services such as CompuServe were most people's method of accessing the online world and Katherine made a name for herself in a CompuServe forum called HSX - Human Sexuality Support Forum.  She became a section leader, later a forum manager and held weekly conferences called The Toy Chest where users would come together to discuss various types and uses of sex toys. Although the forum was of a support nature and was non-commercial, the owners (Howard & Martha Lewis) allowed Katherine to post a library version of a toy catalog within the forum. For this, Katherine is eternally grateful as it ultimately lead to becoming one of the first adult toy stores on the internet (nice-n-naughty.com) long before most people knew what the internet was.
As technology changed over the years, and shopping cart software became available, a new site was created (thinkingadults.com). In 1998, Katherine left California for the Florida Keys. By this time, the internet market was becoming severely diluted with far too many people thinking that selling adult toys on the web was a get rich quick business. Seeing the writing on the wall, Katherine opened a brick and mortar boutique in Islamorada, Florida. Rather than open a typical adult store (which wouldn't have been allowed in the Village of Islamorada in any event), Katherine wanted a somewhat upscale store selling beautiful lingerie in the front of the store with the adult toy section tucked discreetly away in the back. She wanted a place where both locals and tourists, men, women and couples would feel comfortable shopping. A place where there could be floor models of toys on the shelves so customers could actually handle the toys and an all-women sales staff who could explain the products in an adult-to-adult fashion.
Hence, The Romance Store® was born. And those of you who have been there have probably met Katherine and know her real name. This current web site store, has been created to model the brick and mortar store as much as possible with the exception of the lingerie and costumes which we feel would be a nightmare to sell online.
About our product line... Having been in the adult toy business for so many years, we know there is a lot of junk on the market. There are also many decent quality toys made by major manufacturers in addition to a niche market of really fine (and expensive) adult products made by smaller specialty companies. While we would love to sell nothing but the best, we realize that is simply not realistic. It is our goal to bring you the best of each of the categories.
We are NOT the biggest by any means nor do we wish to be. We are NOT an "adult superstore" selling ten copies of essentially the same toy in 6 different colors. We try to choose a variety of products with different uses and sensations instead of a bunch of carbon copies.
About our prices... As you may have noticed if you shop around, prices on the same or similar items vary widely from web site to web site. There are several reasons for this. Some companies try to "bait" you with extremely low pricing on a popular product or two. Once you get into the site though, you'll find prices to be much higher on other items. Some web sites are owned by very large companies and buy in large enough quantities to be able to lower prices on a number of items - particularly the inexpensive "junk" vibrators. Worse yet, are the "fly by night" web sites that offer cheap prices but don't deliver. You'll find The Romance Store®'s prices to be middle of the road - perhaps a little cheaper on some items and a little higher on others. And we do deliver! We've been delivering since 1987.
